Share The Road
Share the Road is a marketing slogan used to express bicyclists rights to the road and demand motorists respect towards bicyclists. It is often misunderstood and misinterpreted by both parties. The slogan is captured on road signs and license plates across the U.S.
The League of American Bicyclists offers tips to both bicyclists and motorists on how to share the road. They include [1]:
For motorists:
- Slow down when bicyclists appear
- Provide extra space for bicyclists, recognizing the dangers that they face
- When passing, leave 4 feet of space between the car and the cyclist
- Be extra cautious with child cyclists; expect the unexpected
- When parked, look behind for bicyclists before opening the car door
For bicyclists:
- Use the correct side of the road: the same direction as traffic flow
- Signal for turns and stops
- Ride predictably, in a straight line, without swerving
- Do not enter the street or intersections without first checking for traffic
- Wear visible clothing and use reflector lights, rear lights and headlights
- Make eye contact with motorists
