Grand Army Plaza, New York City

Grand Army Plaza is an oval-shaped intersection and plaza located at the entrance of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. At its center is The Solders’ and Sailors’ Arch. Each weekend it is host to a "green market" and marks the prominent entrance to Brooklyn’s largest park.
Until recently, the design of Grand Army Plaza favored vehicular traffic and made pedestrian travel very difficult. Since the announcement and subsequent construction of the New York City Department of Transportation ’s list of pedestrian and bicycle-focused improvements in Spring 2007, it has been transformed into an ideal public space. By adding a bicycle path that clearly leads directly into the park and by constructing several pedestrian refuge island s for pedestrians to stand on while crossing the intersection, the space has been reclaimed to fulfill the original intention for its construction in 1867.
