Grand Army Plaza is an oval plaza that is located at the entrance of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. At its center is The Solders’ and Sailors’ Arch. While each weekend it is host to a green market and it is the prominent entrance to Brooklyn’s largest park, until recently, its design favored vehicular traffic and made pedestrian travel very difficult. Since the announcement and subsequent construction of the New York City Department of Transportation ’s list of pedestrian and bicycle-focused improvements in Spring 2007, it has become an ideal public space. By adding a bicycle path that clearly leads directly into the park and by constructing several islands for pedestrians to stand on while crossing the intersection, the space has been reclaimed to fulfill the original intention for its construction in 1867.
