Drachten, The Netherlands
Drachten is a Dutch city in the Province of Friesland. Within the livable streets movement, Drachten is most known for implementing the
shared space
urban planning theory in its city center in 2003. Shared space is a street design approach developed by
Hans Monderman
in which traffic signals and signs, striping, and delineations between sidewalk and street are removed. The resulting ambiguity causes drivers to slow down and all users of the street to behave in a more civil manner. Before Drachten implemented this program, it averaged eight accidents in its city center per year. Since its inception there have been none, as of 2008.
