  • Climate Change Mitigation

Climate Change Mitigation, in the context of streets and city planning, refers to changes in the built environment necessary to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector. Cities throughout the world are examining their planning paradigms and rethinking infrastructure plans to reduce project future GHG emissions.  Alternatives will include developing public transit services that are much more frequent, reliable, convenient, affordable, and user-friendly.  In addition, walking and bicycling must become far more convenient, safe, and commonplace.

U.S. Conference of Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement

Due to a lack of leadership at both the state and federal levels, climate change adaptation planning has been most active at the local level.  As of January 1, 2010, the mayors of 1016 U.S. cities have signed onto the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement[1].

Climate Change Mitigation — reducing greenhouse gas emissions — should not be confused with Climate Change Adaptation, which is an effort to limit losses or damage from likely future changes in weather patterns.  For example, the New York City Panel on Climate Change issued an adaptation strategy that includes transportation measures[2].  This effort grew out of a commitment by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
