The Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen Coalition for Pedestrian Safety (CHEKPEDS) is a New York City community coalition founded to monitor the neighborhood traffic impacts from the Lincoln Tunnel.  The coalition argues that the traffic problems in the neighborhood are pervasive, making pedestrian circulation difficult.  The speed, volume, and behavior of traffic makes it unsafe for children to walk to schools in their own community, increases air pollution, creates excessive noise, and hinders public transportation. In addition to these impacts, the traffic impacts make life difficult for local businesses, who struggle with slow and costly deliveries. Organized by Christine Berthet , CHEKPEDS works with their community board (Community Board 4), numerous city agencies, the Port Authority of both New York and New Jersey, and various elected officials to realize change in their neighborhood.
