The Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen Coalition for Pedestrian Safety (CHEKPEDS) is a coalition that was founded by the community it is named for to monitor the traffic resulting from the Lincoln Tunnel and the problems it causes. The traffic problem in the neighborhood is pervasive, making pedestrian life difficult, making it unsafe for children to walk to schools in their own community, increasing the pollution, creating disturbingly high noise levels, hindering the effectiveness of local public transportation, and making life difficult for local business, who struggle with slow and costly deliveries. Organized by Christine Berthet , CHEKPEDS works with their community board, numerous city agencies, the Port Authority of both New York and New Jersey, and various elected officials to realize change in their neighborhood.
