Bogota, Colombia
Bogotá is the capital and most populous city in Colombia. Within the transportation world, it is known for its radical embrace of transportation alternatives.
When
Enrique Peñalosa
became mayor in 1998 he inherited a massive elevated highway construction plan for his city. This plan would have cost an extraordinary amount of money, increased pollution within the city, and perpetuated a personal vehicle based transportation system in Bogotá, a city where many inhabitants can’t afford a personal vehicle. Instead, he developed one of the world’s most extensive bus rapid transit systems,
TransMilenio
that, today, moves over a million people throughout the system daily. Bogotá is also known for its massive biking system. There are miles and miles of bike routes throughout the city, both in deeply impoverished communities, which rely on it as their only transportation means, and in wealthy neighborhoods. As a show of their support for bikes and general recreation, Bogotá has been made famous for its weekly
ciclovia
, where every Sunday and on holidays 70 miles of streets are closed to vehicular traffic.
