Bertrand Delanoë is a French politician from Tunisia and has been the mayor of Paris since 2001. He is also a likely candidate for the French Socialist Party in the 2012 presidential elections. Delanoë is most known for his dedication to the goals of improving Parisians’ quality of life, reducing pollution, and reducing the quantity of vehicular traffic within Paris. He has accomplished this by popularizing events like La Plage de Paris, The Paris Beach, an event that has, upon popular demand, been reconstructed every summer since 2002 to provide a vacation to those who can’t afford to leave the city. Another of his revitalizing measures is Vélib, Free Bicycles. Through this program, Parisians are able to cheaply rent and return bicycles to stations throughout the city. He hopes to extend this program to cars, in an effort to decrease traffic in Paris.
