Don't Forget: Community Board 7 Meeting Tonight. 106th Street Bike Lane

from Peter Goldwasser on 2008-04-08 09:56
Good morning Upper West Side bicycle and safe streets enthusiasts:

A final reminder to attend tonight’s important meeting:

Community Board 7
250 West 87th Street, 2nd Floor (just west of Broadway)
7:00PM
My contact number incase you need to call: 917-375-0720

Over the last 2 weeks many of you have let your voice been heard and written letters to the board! Tonight, take the next and CRITICALLY IMPORTANT step of attending the meeting and showing the board and the DOT just how important improvements to the cycling infrastructure of our community really is.

The process is easy. Arrive on time, sign in, and your name will be called. The board is very nice to public speakers, but if you don’t want to speak you can still make a difference by being there with your bike helmet and nodding enthusiastically as others speak.

Hope to see you all there. Any questions, just give me a call.

And finally, since April is National Poetry Month, I leave you with one of a kind original cycling related verse created by a fellow UWS cycling enthusiast and amazing local advocate Tila. Enjoy, and per her suggestion, perhaps even recite one or two verses tonight!

We see on the Upper West Side
More and more people starting to ride.
But they need a safe way
To reach “B” from “A”
In a safe lane, they’d cycle with pride.

Bicycling in New York can be tough
And a stripe on the road ain’t enough
Autos need some correction,
We need more protection
>From hotrodders strutting their stuff.

Whenever we cycle around,
Swinging doors, other hazards abound.
Protected bike lanes
Would be gigantic gains
For all kinds of folks, it’s been found.

A bike lane keeps bikes on the street,
Leaving sidewalks for creatures on feet.
Speeding cars wreaking havoc,
What’s the use of this traffic?
Please give bikes their due, tout de suite.

Smart design makes sure cyclists have spaces
And safe ways to get between places.
If stickball is dead,
Kids can cycle instead!
Let’s imagine the smiles on their faces.

There are many good reasons for bikes;
Better health, clean air everyone likes.
Safer cycling promotes
An influx of votes
>From appreciative parents of tykes.
