Overview
Project Lead: Kevin Vincent
Backstory: Advocacy along the Kent Avenue lanes in north Brooklyn's CB#1 communities of Williamsburg and Greenpoint is vital to keeping the precursor of the future Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. In October 2008 the DOT striped class 2, north/south lanes along Kent Avenue in a very abrupt way, causing anger in the community. A community board meeting and a transportation town hall, both in November 2008, subsequently saw a very outspoken constituency rallying against the lanes.
Challenges: Maintaining a strong voice for cyclists and peds with our specific neighborhood needs in mind.

28 September 2009 - Sign this petition in support of the Kent Ave Bicycle Lanes!! Ruckus and hullabaloo in the neighborhood about the 2nd redesign of Kent Ave isn't necessarily focused on cyclists, but we want the DOT to know that we support the interim two-way protected bike lane and its placeholder for the future Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. Current issues rightly focus on the issue of trucks in Community Board #1. Good to remember that it's a full neighborhood issue, not just a get-the-trucks-off-my-block issue.
27 May 2009 - CB#1 Transportation Committee Meeting; Presentation by the NYC DOT re: Kent Ave (2nd) Redesign
Brooklyn Commissioner Joseph Palmieri was present as the DOT presented its long-awaited second redesign of Kent Avenue. Here's the link to DOT's pdf of the presentation, but the main elements include a one-way northbound for vehicular travel from Clymer to N14th; restoration of parking on the west side of the street and loading zones on the east side of the street; a buffered two-way bicycle path more closely resembling the footprint of the future Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway on the west side of the street. Here's more about that meeting.
