Bike Education Outreach in Prospect Park

Prospect Park sees hundreds of cyclists, and the Brooklyn Committee of Transportation Alternatives spent Saturday afternoon making sure those riders were safe. Volunteers spent three hours distributing ‘Road Rules’ pamphlets, bike maps, bike month calendars, TA literature, and friendly goodwill to approximately 300 cyclists, about 50 of whom enjoyed free chain lube and safety checks. With bike riding surging across NYC, there are thousands of brand new riders who need a hand with basic maintenance and may not know it’s illegal to ride on the sidewalk or ride against vehicular traffic. No one wants to be told how to ride, but most cyclists were extremely receptive to the Brooklyn Committee volunteers pointing out the risks to both bikes and pedestrians.
Photographer Lois Bielefeld snapped these two pics. The rest of the action can be seen right here.

Great stuff. I am so glad to see this worked out so well.
