  • Sample Press Announcement

Here is a sample press announcement that can be used to spread the word about your parking spot. You can send it to your neighborhood newspapers as well as local elected officials and community board.

Of course, you should fill in the information as it applies to your specific spot. Try to keep it as brief as possible, but make sure it contains the who/what/when/where/why. With respect to the "who," include one or two sentences about your group - even if it's a gang of friends or a couple of concerned neighbors, it's a key part of the story.

The best time to send out your press announcement is roughly a week in advance to allow officials to work you into their schedule. A follow-up 1 day prior is good for media.

PARK(ing) Day is a worldwide event where street space normally occupied by parked vehicles is repurposed as temporary mini-parks, playgrounds, planting areas, and other human-friendly spaces, to raise awareness of the allocation of so much of our public space for motor vehicles. PARK(ing) Day NYC 2008 will create at least 50 such oases scattered around the city.

The Transportation Committees of Manhattan Community Board 2 (Greenwich Village, SoHo and adjacent neighborhoods) and Community Board 4 (Chelsea, Clinton/Hell's Kitchen) are collaborating to present a PARK(ing) Day spot on the border of the Boards' districts, on Eighth Avenue at W. 14th St. The "spot" will include green space and seating to encourage casual interaction between members of the community. In addition, to reflect requests from both Boards to the Department of Transportation to accommodate bicycle parking in the streetbed, we will also offer a temporary on-street bike parking location alongside the heavily-travelled Eighth Ave. bike lane and in front of a gourmet grocery destination.

Members of both community boards will be present all day long to welcome visitors to the "spot." Over the course of the day we also hope to be joined by several of our local elected officials, who work hand in hand with the community boards to address the many traffic and public space challenges that face our communities day in and day out.
