About Park(ing) Day
Park(ing) Day was founded in 2005 by REBAR, a San Francisco-based arts collective, as a national event in which people in cities all over the country reclaim parking spots for one day, transforming them into vibrant, functional public spaces. In the years since its debut, it has expanded globally to include over 200 Park(ing) Spots in 50 cities around the world.
In 2007 Transportation Alternatives (T.A.), in partnership with the Trust for Public Land, launched Park(ing) Day NYC, bringing the internationally successful public space intervention to New York. It featured 25 high-visibility parking spots, located throughout New York City. Each space was individually organized and executed by partners and allies that included elected officials, artists, architects and planners, advocates and engaged citizens (check out the great Streetfilm about the 2007 event ).
This year, Park(ing) Day NYC will expand its presence by doubling the number of locations to 50; in addition, it will facilitate up to 15 collaborative partnerships between community stakeholders and progressive architects and designers. These site specific collaborations will reflect the social, cultural and architectural contexts in which they’re situated, as well as generate innovative proof-of-concept designs for public space reclamation.
In addition to the 15 collaborative Park(ing) Spots, new public spaces will also be constructed by individuals and organizations in parking spots. Seating areas, art installations, and community engagement will all make the case for a more sensible and human-friendly distribution of available urban public space.
All Park(ing) Spots will be sponsored by T.A. with mini-grant funding for construction materials. Collaborative Park(ing) Spots will be granted $300, and individuals and groups will receive $200 each. In addition, awards will be given to the best collaborative and individual Park(ing) Spots.

* A parking spot! Even better, a metered parking spot (the parking spot cannot be a No-Standing Zone, School Zone, etc.)
* Lots of foot traffic
*Friendly local businesses
*Landmarks or public attractions (libraries, civic centers, etc.)
