We are a group of students and residents of New York City who have come together over our shared opinion that much of the city’s land is misused. We feel that for a city that boasts such an efficient mass transit system, yet suffers from a massive space crunch, it makes no sense to devote so much land (45% of Manhattan) to the automobile. We lament the lack of public and park space in New York City and seek to reclaim the streets as such. We hope to raise awareness and demonstrate to our classmates and neighbors that there are alternative and better ways to utilize this valuable land. On September 21st and beyond we aim to inspire others to dream, imagine, and plan for a more livable New York.
The site will use Astroturf for the ground cover, since it is more cost effective and can be reused by Columbia students at future Park(ing) days. The site design will also involve some fencing to define the boundary of the site and some small plants for landscaping. Some inexpensive beach chairs will also be purchased for street furniture. To draw attention to the site, the volunteers will distribute free apple cider purchased from a local producer. |

We'll have some chairs, lemonade and shade set up so you can stop by and relax.
For those of you visiting by bike, we're planning on having a volunteer bike mechanic available in case you need a quick tune-up. Birdbath Bakery will be offering a 25% discount to cyclists. We'll also have a morning visit from the lovable bike lane liberation clowns, as well as musical entertainment--bring an instrument and be part of the fun and play a few songs on your way to work. Also, help spruce up the neighboring tree pit in need of a little love.
We'll have free copies of the energy edition of the Green Apple Map, NYC bike maps, Time's Up! event calendars, carbon-free mobility stickers, buttons, patches and info on ways you can help the environment. Learn more about your power to make a change! |

SATURDAY
September 22, 9AM-3PM |
Our goal is to temporarily reclaim street space by
repurposing it into public space for use by passing pedestrians and bicyclists. We do this by choosing two on-street parking spaces, placing a physical division between the street traffic and the area of the parking spaces, and placing street furniture or other amenities within the area of the parking spaces. |

We will have sod on the ground to recreate the park feel, and a couple of chairs for relaxing. We will also have informational material for our campaign to decomission the Sheridan Expressway.
We are participating in Park(ing) Day because we feel it is a great way to get out the idea of rethinking land use. The idea of taking land now dedicated to private automobiles and turning it over to open spaces and other beneficial public uses such as job-creating retail space and affordable housing is what our campaign is all about. Please see www.southbronxvision.org or www.sheridanswap.blogspot.com for more info. |
