Consultant to study passenger rail plan for panel

Members of the Reading Area Transportation Study learned Thursday that a consultant soon will be hired to study the extension of passenger rail service between Wyomissing and Norristown.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission is selecting a consultant to determine whether a toll on vehicles using a portion of Route 422 would provide enough money to maintain the highway and pay for passenger train service.
Officials in Montgomery and Chester counties have suggested installing the toll booths between Douglassville and King of Prussia.

The so-called R-6 extension would extend a SEPTA line into Berks County. Officials have estimated the service would cost about $500 million to start.
