I just returned home from the Safe Routes to School National Conference — hosted in Portland, Oregon. While there is much to share about lessons learned for the Safe Routes to School movement — today, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on an article just shared with me. The focus here is the economic benefits of reducing vehicle miles driven. Bicycling and walking play key roles in building the city’s economy. Take a look!

Portland has gained more than economic benefits — as their transportation safety has increased with every new bicycle and pedestrian on their streets.  Take a look at the 2008 Fatality Report!

Some highlights from the data include:

  • The lowest number of fatalities for motor vehicle occupants on record
  • The lowest number of pedestrian fatalities on record 
  • The fifth year in the past decade with zero bicycle fatalities in the City of Portland
