OCTOBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

New Haven Safe Streets Coalition:
Here are a few items that may be of interest.

+ Route 34 / Frontage Road Pedestrian Crossings at Yale Medical Area
Information about your experience crossing these roads would be most helpful.  If you feel that pedestrian signals and other improvements are needed at the crossings on Route 34, please add your comments and votes on the site listed below. Comments are being compiled for city, state and other officials responsible for this area -- even though over 2,700 individual residents have petitioned for specific solutions here since 2006, the area is still widely known as a "death trap":

+ State Legislation: Connecticut Livable Streets
Following the passage of several laws last year in Hartford, the Connecticut Livable Streets Campaign is once again working with partners to coordinate livable streets legislation at the state level.  Possible legislation this year includes stricter penalties for driving while text messaging (refer to http://topics.nytimes.com/topics/news/technology/series/driven_to_distraction/index.html ).  If you are interested in helping with the campaign in any way, please contact the steering committee at ctlivablestreets [at] gmail.com.

+ Local Legislation: Complete Streets
Modeled after similar work in many other cities, New Haven's Complete Streets Committee (created by unanimous vote of the Board of Aldermen in October 2008) continues to work on a completely new design manual for local streets. According to the committee, their draft guidelines should be available for public comment in the near future.

+ ECC Bike to Work Breakfast, sponsored by Yale New Haven Hospital and Blue State Cafe, Friday, October 16, 730AM-930AM.
Join Elm City Cycling outside New Haven City Hall, Church Street across from the Green for this year’s last bike-to-work breakfast. Free.
