Safe Streets Update 080608
The coalition has new items to report. Please check
http://www.newhavensafestreets.org/ for additional updates and the
most recent list of supporters.
BOARD OF ALDERMEN PUBLIC SAFETY SUBCOMMITTEE: WED., AUG. 6TH, 6PM
This event, at 6pm at City Hall, is a meet & greet with the city's new
Chief of Police. Please come and express your concerns to your
Aldermen and to the new Chief. This may be a good opportunity to show
community concern for traffic safety. One suggested question: How can
we improve the specific collection and sharing of citywide
traffic-safety related data, so that neighborhoods and block watches
can better understand the issues and advocate for their own interests?
BIKE TO WORK BREAKFAST, FRI., AUG. 8TH, 7:30-9:30AM
August 8th, 7:30-9:30am in front of City Hall. Free breakfast; learn
the best commuting routes. Sponsored by ElmCityCycling.
FAIR HAVEN STREET CHALKING EVENT, SAT., AUG. 9TH, 10AM
A street chalking event at Chatham Square in Fair Haven will follow up
on the workshop with Dan Burden. Participants will be drawing, on the
street in chalk, the improvements suggested by the community. All are
welcome to participate. See here for background:

OPEN LETTER TO CITY OF NEW HAVEN ON IN-STREET PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK SIGNS
This document contains research on why in-street signs are effective,
cost-efficient and should be deployed throughout the city. It is
being distributed today and a copy is attached here. Please contact
Tom Harned, thomas.harned@..., with any questions.
COALITION FOR A LIVABLE WHALLEY UPDATE
The Coalition held a community workshop on July 24th which was
attended by over 50 neighborhood residents and business owners.
Please see the coalition's website at http://www.whalleyavenue.com/
for a summary. The workshop was followed by a 7/31 public hearing,
convened by Senator Harp and Representative Pat Dillon, on the Whalley
Avenue reconstruction project. For a detailed summary of that event,
please see
http://www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/2008/08/conflicting_vis.php.
The Coalition for a Livable Whalley encourages you to email them at
whalleyavenue@... if you are interested in providing comments on
the plan to reconstruct and widen Whalley Avenue.
EAST ROCK, OTHERS SIGN ONTO SAFE STREETS
The East Rock Community Management Team became the 10th of 12
neighborhood management teams to sign onto the petition. See
http://www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/2008/07/east_rock.php for
a recap of the meeting and discussion with the city's new Chief of
Police. Coalition members are going door-to-door to sign up
additional supporting organizations and help raise awareness of
traffic safety issues.
NEW CITYWIDE TRAFFIC SAFETY HOTLINE
NHPD's Lt. Witkowski has created a new Traffic Safety Hotline.
Citizens can call 946-6956 or email TrafficSafety \at\ newhavenct.net
to report general problem areas, i.e. "speeding on x street" (the more
specific the better), license plate IDs of motorists committing
traffic violations (call with location, type of violation, vehicle
description and license plate number). Violators will be contacted.
If an officer is needed at the scene, callers should still dial 911 or
946-6316.
OPEN LETTER TO YALE UNIVERSITY REGARDING TRAFFIC SAFETY AND INFRASTRUCTURE
A group of students and alumni published this online last week at
http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/24841 and distributed it to
the University administration. Follow up will closely coincide with
university-wide education and coordination efforts led by the Yale
Medical Campus Traffic Safety Group and other coalition supporters.
Volunteers are needed to help get the word out about this as the
university gets back into session next month, and also to help start
similar efforts at the city's other colleges and universities.
