Safe Streets Update 072208
The coalition has a few new items to report. Please check
http://www.newhavensafestreets.org/ for additional updates and the
most recent list of supporters.
COALITION GROWS
The list of Petition for Safe Streets sponsors has continued to grow
dramatically over the past month, now including groups such as the
Town Green Special Services District Board of Commissioners,
Connecticut Safe Kids, and 9 of the city's 12 Community Management
Teams. Organizers expect many additional organizations and community
associations to vote in support over the coming weeks. To date over
1,400 citizens have signed the Petition.
COALITION FOR A LIVABLE WHALLEY: COMMUNITY WORKSHOP ON WHALLEY AVENUE
RECONSTRUCTION (7/24)
In advance of the ConnDOT public hearing (see below), and as part of
the growing "safe streets" movement in New Haven, the Coalition for a
Livable Whalley will hold a community workshop this week to review the
DOT's construction plans and help gather ideas and support for making
Whalley Avenue safer, calmer and more vibrant. The event will take
place at Congregation Beth El-Keser Israel (BEKI), 85 Harrison St. at
Whalley Avenue, New Haven, Thursday, July 24, 6 p.m. Contact
whalleyavenue \at\ gmail.com or Chris Heitmann (203-745-3173) for more
information, and visit www.whalleyavenue.com. A one-page flyer about
the event has been prepared for general distribution within the
neighborhood. Please contact Chris or me if you would like an
electronic copy of the flyer for posting.
CONNDOT PUBLIC HEARING ON WHALLEY AVENUE RECONSTRUCTION (7/31)
This meeting, convened by state Rep. Pat Dillon and State Sen. Toni
Harp, is scheduled for July 31 from 5 to 8 pm at Edgewood School, 737
Edgewood Ave., in New Haven.
NEW CITYWIDE TRAFFIC SAFETY HOTLINE
NHPD's Lt. Witkowski has created a new Traffic Safety Hotline.
Citizens can call 946-6956 or email TrafficSafety \at\ newhavenct.net
to report general problem areas, i.e. "speeding on x street" (the more
specific the better), license plate IDs of motorists committing
traffic violations (call with location, type of violation, vehicle
description and license plate number). If the same vehicle is reported
more than once, a letter will be sent to notify the owner. The hotline
can also be used to initiate investigations, but an officer will not
be dispatched to the scene. If an officer is needed at the scene,
callers should still dial 911 or 946-6316.
BOARD OF ALDERMEN PUBLIC SAFETY SUBCOMMITTEE (8/6)
Save the date: August 6th at City Hall. Traffic safety is expected to
be a topic of discussion and the new police chief may be there. Talk
to your Aldermen in advance if you can, or come to the meeting at City
Hall, and show your support for safe streets. The PSS meeting has
typically not been well attended, so this may be a good opportunity to
show community concern for traffic safety.
OPEN LETTER TO YALE UNIVERSITY REGARDING TRAFFIC SAFETY
Currently being published and distributed. Look for updates early next week.
OPEN LETTER ON IN-STREET PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK SIGNS
Expected to be published in early August. The document, sponsored by
ElmCityCycling, contains research on why the signs -- which are being
used in hundreds of other cities and towns throughout the Northeast --
should be used throughout the city.
STREET CHALKING EVENT
Early August street chalking event in Fair Haven will follow up on the
workshop with Dan Burden. Contact Grace Johnston for more
information, grace.johnston \at\ gmail.com.
REDESIGNED PROSPECT/TRUMBULL INTERSECTION APPROVED, BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN
http://www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/2008/07/new_intersectio.php
Note comments. Will one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in
the city be designed with pedestrians as the #1 priority?

BIKE TO WORK BREAKFAST (8/8)
August 8th, 7:30-9:30am in front of City Hall. Free breakfast; learn
the best commuting routes. Sponsored by ElmCityCycling.
YALE MEDICAL CAMPUS TRAFFIC SAFETY GROUP (7/30)
The group had a successful meeting on July 9th; the next meeting is
scheduled for July 30th. See meeting minutes here:
http://mailman.yale.edu/pipermail/traffic-safety/2008-July/000025.html.
The group is currently planning pedestrian and driver education
campaigns to coincide with the start of the school year.
LEGISLATIVE AGENDA
Members of the group are currently working on a legislative platform,
which will begin this fall and suggest that coalition supporters work
together to address various issues at the local, state and national
levels. Stay tuned for information and contact us to get involved.
Please contact me if you have questions or items to share with the
group, or would like to volunteer for any specific campaign items.
