Hol(e)y Crap
Yeah, this bridge (MnDOT#5598) was built before there were Flintstone cars. Just kidding, it was constructed in 1939 out of steel and concrete. The overall design of the bridge is actually rather pleasing to me, but it is out of date and out of today’s “complete street” standards. There is no shoulder, there are large potholes and the sidewalk has cracks that go well beyond the standards for accessibility of the ADA. The last I heard the bridge, along with the Excelsior BLVD bridge to the south will be replaced in the near future, but who knows when that will be. If you have ever ridden or walked over this bridge please tell me about your experiences. I rode over it a few times this summer and last and I really have no desire to do it again… I do love the rush of adrenaline that comes when a huge delivery truck whizzes past at 40 MPH within 2 feet of the handlebars. ![]()
