Getting people to show up and be motivated is always a problem with
volunteer organizations and I have no answers. I could not make last two

Good question. David Nimowitz and I have been talking about going to a
green roofs, / solar / recycling meeting that night. As he says, all year
we've been plagued by "one-offs" of conflicts with the third Weds (which was
our usual meeting time). We have put it off to the 3rd Thursday a couple
of times (it's ok for me). We aren't wedded to third Weds. I can easily
make up a surveymonkey survey to find out the best times for meetings.
Should I do that? The survey could have other questions on it as well ...
In any event, here are some "ideas" about internal organization from my
limited experience on Eastside effort which may, or may not, be helpful:
1) schedule meetings sufficiently in advance with email reminders on exact
date;
2) change name to correspond to a geographical area larger than Inwood
perhaps from from West Harlem to Inwood so it is inclusive of more cyclists
and identifies several priority projects linking different neighborhoods,
someone had suggested something like "NoMan" (Northern Manhattan ) (FYI the
Eastside comm covered entire Eastside of NYC and typically 10-20 people
showed up at comm meetings although usually a core of less than 5 people did
all work, the 3 projects were bike path network, closing ES greenway gap and
protected bike lanes on 1st and 2nd);
We have had repeated and extensive discussions about the name. For one,
there is already a Harlem Livable Streets, so NoMa was rejected as too
broad. We are still Inwood and Washington Heights (that's what the front of
our site says) and we bought both domains in case we ever get big enough to
split.
3) ask TA and other cycling organizations to make their membership email
address database available to recruit new members and/or later circulate
petition (that is how we got 1000 signatures on ES petition);
I guess we haven't actually done this, even though I'm sure I've asked them
for help a few times. I'm pretty sure that NYCC and 5BBC won't give us
their lists and I'd be surprised if TA did. More likely is that they would
allow us to create something that they would send (meeting announcement with
our web address, for example). Someone could be in charge of doing this..
4) develop several priority projects so that each member can work on a
project in their own neighborhood, rather than just one project which may
interest a smaller segment (Inwood connector is greatly needed and I look
forward to riding on it and on up the Hudson but is not an everyday
commuting issue for those of us below Inwood).
We have loads of projects. Not sure if you have looked at the "page" -
lower right which has our projects and goals. We've narrowed it down quite
a bit to the most important ones too...
5) once group is defined
this has been the problem...
In order to do petitions you need lots of people... active ones. We were
going to try to get businesses on Dyckman to sign letters (that we wrote) in
favor of the Greenway connector. I was the only one to get any and I only
got 2, and both with help from a long-time friend. The others I tried
failed. All this has been written about extensively in our discussions.
and several common prioities are identified, get a petition drive going.
Petition could be based on traffic calming theme and include several cross
neighborhood proposals such as Inwood connector; protected bike lane on a
major N/S avenue; enforcing no double parking rules against gypsy cabs at
other offenders; solving end of line bus congestion problems; and/or
segregated rapid bus lane; etc. (I am happy to draft something like I sent
before).
Just ideas. In any event I will try to make next meeting.

This is fascinating. Not so much the design, but the appearance that
Columbia did all this work for the NYCC (for free?) We have been
chattering about doing such studies, but not advancing our ideas beyond the
talking stage. I agree, it's a lot of money, but for the NYCC this is
something that would make life a lot easier (but not worth $2.1 million).
Now what I'd like to see is us going to the same group at Columbia with the
idea of connecting that ramp to the Amtrak bridge over near the tennis
courts south of the bridge. That would make a helluva lot more sense.
Thing about it is this, and I sound like a broken record, but in order to
make progress on anything we absolutely need more active members. When 2
people show up at a monthly meeting, nothing will get done. Plain and
simple. We can have all the best ideas in the world, but (1) no single
person wants to or should have to do it alone and (2) if that were to
happen, it wouldn't be the whole organization speaking in unison anyway.
To my mind of all the issues we have on the table, the one that floats to
the top is internal organization and motivation. We have to crack this
nut. Would money from councilmember / assemblyman help? How?
Ideas?
