Susan Burstein from Denny Farrell's office sent out 2 emails this morning
to DIN Action and to a short email list of local activists asking about
the rumor of a pedestrian mall on Dyckman St.  This is clearly what
Denny had called me about.  I have answered on the DIN Action forum
thus:
Inwood Livable Streets (go to
and join the discussion group, which started in June of 2008 and now has
65 local members)

http://www.livablestreets.com/projects/inwood-livable-streets/summary
has been pushing the idea of a Dyckman Greenway connector for the
purpose of enhancing cycling on Riverside Drive and Dyckman, paired with
bulb-outs and more trees and reducing the number of travel lanes from 4
to 3.  Attached is the handout that we first gave to CB12 in
February of 2008.   We have argued the case at CB12 on 3
occasions and they passed a resolution several months ago to have the DOT
look at the feasibility of doing this.  A pedestrian mall would be
even better, assuming there's paired bike lane.   I will bet
you that the vast majority of shoppers on Dyckman street do not go there
by car.  It would be a good study to confirm that
fact.
So my note from last night was not entirely accurate, since he has heard
a rumor about a pedestrian mall.  I was not listening clearly
enough.  I will call him back and speak for myself.  I will
also invite Susan Burstein to our meeting tonight.   It's
important we have a good showing because an intern from Senator
Schneiderman's office may also come.    1795 Riverside,
