  • Bike racks

    from Aaron on 2008-08-08 14:05
    I'm amazed sometimes that there are practically no bike racks in Inwood. I would love to keep a beater bike outside, but I don't want to start a trend that will end with people locking bikes to trees and other landscaping.

    Always conflicted, I also think tons of unused rusting bikes all over the place is a serious eyesore.

    I have not requested any racks be installed. What do others think? I'm happy enough using my Razor scooter to get to C-Town and PJ's. But a few legal places to lock up a beater wouldn't be bad.

    If you don't ask, you won't get anything. You'll notice that
    the Target on 225th St has a bunch of bike racks in front of it -
    that's because I called the NYC DoT a couple of years ago and got
    lucky.

    It just occurred to me I should do the same thing for Garden Gourmet -
    they're blocking the traffic pole I usually use when shopping there
    with some kind of cart.

      I have not asked because I'm ambivalent about bike racks in the
      neighborhood. I'm interested in hearing others' thoughts on the pros and
      cons.

      Wow... couple of years.  Is that how long it takes?
      A few months ago there was a drive (a survey?) and I put in for one in
      front of the Inwood post office...

        In the case of Target, it took only 2 or 3 weeks. I called the DoT
        phone number for City Racks and happened to reach the Right Person.
        That incident probably used up all the luck I will have dealing
        with city agencies for the next decade.

      As chair of the community board 21 transportation cmmte, I have the
      ear of DoT. I'd be happy to ask them to install bike racks at the
      locations everyone agrees on. i will put this on the agenda for our
      sept. mtg, tentatively scheduled for Sept 8.

      • Repaving of Broadway in Inwood

        from Maggie Clarke on 2008-08-10 14:37
        As chair of the community board
        21 transportation cmmte,
        Gee, I've always thought that Inwood should be CB13 :-)  especially
        since there's nobody from Inwood on the board... and we're miles away
        from the board's office and most of its members...
        I decided to ride up to Bronxville today and along Broadway, I've been
        noticing some conditions just getting worse and worse over the
        years.  Aside from the general repaving needs of the street since
        there are so many patches, there is a real serious condition on the east
        side of the street between 207 and Isham.  Bicyclists going north
        there can easily be thrown off their bikes if they don't slow down A Lot
        and hold onto the brakes.  The big buses that come around the corner
        and brake there have been shoving up tremendous wads of asphalt in a wavy
        pattern.  It's not just the lane closest to the sidewalk
        either.  It's also the middle lane.  In other (more prosperous
        parts of NYC) I see that DOT puts in concrete where the buses
        brake.  That stays put in warmer weather.  We need two lanes of
        it here for this block.  I hope CB12 / 13 will put in for it
        now.
        Smaller job but similar - Just north of Dyckman you also have the wavy
        pattern in the lane near the curb.  Also,  some of the asphalt
        at the curb has disappeared.  In combination with the local food
        stores throwing smelly water there, it gets pretty bad at times
        collecting in the ruts.  That area needs concrete as
        well.
        Likewise, on Broadway just south of Riverside, the road has the wavy
        pattern.  I've nearly tripped crossing the street.   All
        of these are issues of liability for the city.  They are accidents
        waiting to happen.  If there are plans to repave Broadway on the
        drawing boards now, Please make them change it from asphalt to concrete
        where buses stop.

          I will bring all 3 of the paving issues Maggie raised to the attention of DoT. Bway north of 207 is a huge mess in part because ConEd is ripping up the street to install a major new power line. (I and others on the CB fought to have the line run down 10th Ave., which would have been much less disruptive, but unfortunately ConEd didn't yield.)

            Thanks Mark.  Actually, having had the Con Ed line reconstruction
            run down Broadway could turn into a blessing IF we take the opportunity
            to get it repaved with ALL the bus stops done in concrete (plus an extra
            lane for the Bx12 end stop).  The more I think about it, the more I
            remember more ripplings (e.g. just before 218th going north, etc).
            And we have to make sure that the seam between the concrete and the rest
            is seamLess or you have another safety issue.

        In principle, I think there should be a bike rack on every block, just
        as there is car parking. However, recognizing that Rome wasn't built in
        a day, I would prioritize the following locations:

        1) Subway stops (to support intermodal commuting)
        * Broadway and 207th St
        * Broadway and Dyckman St
        * 207th St and 10th Ave
        * Dyckman St and Nagle Ave

        2) Bus stops (to support intermodal commuting)
        * Bx7, Bx12, Bx20, M100 routes

        3) Entrances to Inwood Hill and Fort Tryon Parks

        4) Significant commercial establishments
        * Supermarkets
        * Banks
        * Post office
        * Religious institutions

    I think we should have official racks to encourage cycling and improve
    conditions for commuters. I don't think we're going to end up with a
    surfeit of locked, unused bikes rusting away on these racks. If we do,
    I'd rather cross that bridge when we come to it.
