Echo Park/Silver Lake Meeting Notes: 6/15/09
Introductions -
* Organize Echo Park/Silver Lake communities to create more livable streets
Glendale Issues Blvd.
- The way people get to downtown from Echo Park/Silver Lake
- New schools opened just south of Glendale off 2nd
- School children walk near school
- Right now only traffic is calming congestion
Frame Issue
- Access to green space, parks and pools
- More transportation choices
- Road-improvement of all sorts
Some ideas:
- Push for a bike lanes on Glendale Blvd.
- Riders should be educated to “take the lane” when needed
- Overall goal is education of motorists and cyclists
- Caltrans controls Glendale Blvd. - work with state & whole community
- Make it less of bike issue, more of a neighborhood or green issue
- Mini bike-ped count - at transit stops, by schools, conduct demonstration/march/ride on Glendale to educate and emphasize the need for safety on Glendale
Make Specific Demands
- Planted medians
- Bike lane on Glendale Blvd.
- MTA: buses are giant moving billboards
- State: DMV training books
- Signs in Walgreens
Work with Echo Park/ Silverlake Community
Echo Park Improvement Association, NCs, etc.
Next Steps
- Get everyone to comment on SR-2 Plan-forward e-mail to friends to get comments by July 2nd.
- Host another bigger meeting, in Echo Park: Monday July 13th, 6:30-7:30pm in the park
- Create a flyer to post in community areas, coffee shops- translate into Spanish
- Create facebook group/googlegroup/livable streets group (done)
- Look into community-based planning grant- Caltrans, LA City Community beautification grant
- Get information from Alta Planning Firm on Glendale street width(s)
