Hello to dog owners/human companions of NYC and surroundings!

Have a dog, or two, but feeling blue because MTA, LIRR, PATH, NJ Transit and so on won't let them on board? Well, now is the time to turn on the charm offensive...

  • Overview: What is the problem? The majority of people in NYC use transit to get around, combining it with walking, but except for Metro North, large and small pet dogs are not allowed on transit in and around NYC. This reduces activity options for people and their dogs, forces dog people to spend exorbitant amounts of money on special pet taxis, and, at worst, compels many otherwise carfree people to drive if they want to go further then walking distance from their homes.
  • Goal: What do you want to achieve? Simply, to allow the transit systems to allow pet dogs on board their vehicles, on a leash, happily sitting or laying on the floor. (My opinion is that it would be best if was free and self-managed like the bikes on board program, but others will think differently...)
  • Planning: What steps need to be taken? This is a part of a national, and perhaps international project (USA and Canada), and FIRST we need to get individuals and 501c3 organizations involved, in order to build momentum and a voice, and also get a project properly funded, so we can do it right, paid or at least as volunteers with expenses paid for. I am focusing the first phase on building on the "canine mobility chain" in places pet dog carriage is already allowed (Boston, SF, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver... plus Metro North in NYC).
  • Tasks: - Local outreach (even minimal stuff, like posting flyers in neighbourhood pet shop and vets)
    - Web design, graphic design
    - Just being present
    - (Your ideas here...)
  • Links: Are there other websites with related information? SURE! First, click HERE for information on the international project. This also gives details on how the project would or could work in NYC and surroundings...  this is my Dogster group...   PLUS a semi-defunct petition with a similar goal. Read carefully:  It is past the stated deadline. The sponsor has said she cannot work on it any longer and would let me to take over but since then has been impossible to reach. I am also somewhat against the regulations she proposes, not because I don't think proper behavior is important, but because rules like this or something similar is required nowhere else, even in Canada or the USA where dogs are allowed on transit.  BUT it is still a great way to show the demand for canine carriage on transit. So please sign, but if you do, make sure you also get in contact with me directly by email or Skype (this info is in the links above.) Thanks!
  • Pictures: Have any shots of your group in action? NOT yet..
