  • 79th & Amsterdam

I am so glad this group exists. I have complained about the intersection of 79th & Amsterdam for years now, and after all those complaints all that has changed is that there is a yellow sign high up on a pole telling drivers to yield to pedestrians. My wife was hit at this intersection about 10 years ago while I stood right next to her. She only had a broken leg in the end, but could easily have been killed. Then a friend was hit under identical circumstances a couple of years later. Both were hit by a northbound vehicle turning left onto 79th. Both were hit while in the crosswalk with a white Walk light lit. Amazingly, both were also hit while in the two eastbound lanes, meaning that in both cases the vehicle was actually cutting the turn so close that it was making a left turn into what would have been oncoming traffic, if there had been any at the time. I reported this to Gale Brewer several times and to DOT and to other city agencies I can't recall right now.

Well, that's my welcoming statement! I look forward to hearing from you all.

    Sincerely,

    Ethan Finneran

Hopefully what's on nycstreets will also get to city officials, although I
don't know if we have a formal mechanism for that yet. I'm sure nycstreets
will make sure that our concerns are reported!
