  • 161st Street and Ruppert Place, Bronx

The original post about this intersection is here. I have since sent an email to the DOT and spoken directly with Constance Moran the Bronx Borough Commissioner at the DOT. She said that there may be plans to do something with this intersection when they complete the new Yankee Stadium, but she was not certain.

Here is the way it looks now:

(The sidewalk ends suddenly and you're dumped in to a painted median strip with nothing more than skimpy metal poles to protect you from the onslaught of cars on both sides. The man in the red shirt is standing on the sidewalk in question.)

There is no "yield" sign... just a "merge" sign. To cross one must stand in the street between the metal poles-- then, when you don't see a lot of cars, DASH for the other side.

I also asked a local cop what one was supposed to do at that intersection and she told me that the cars should yield... but there is no yield sign... so they don't.

(Drivers just can't see the people getting ready to cross the street on the left. And even when they do... they never stop. Most motorists think that people crossing here are jaywalking-- but they aren't. This is supposed to be a pedestrian crossing point.)

Changes that could help:

  • Raise the painted traffic islands up and plant grass on them.
  • Replace metal polls with bigger bollards.
  • Paint crosswalks.
  • Have ramps.
  • Add signs indicating that people cross here and cars must yield.
  • Possibly add a light? When the new metro north station opens a lot of people will cross here on game days. The metro north station will be where the old stadium is-- so everyone from the train will come out and cross right at this intersection.
  • Rather than parking cars half-way on the sidewalk under the overpass, put in on-street metered parking with higher rates during games with the muni-meter.  Normally, I don't like on street parking, but at least with th cars there there is SOME kind of buffer zone. And if they charge for it it might not be so bad. It's just so WIDE and SCARY.
