For those of you who weren't able to be there, I'll summarize:
--We're concerned about high-speed traffic on Smith and Court streets, and the dangers it presents to children, seniors, and everyone else in our neighborhood.
--We want to work with the community board, the DOT, the police, and elected officials to get some attention paid to these streets. The intersection of Sackett and Smith is one example of a place where pedestrians could easily have been killed as the result of a car coming up onto the sidewalk. There's a petition circulating currently to get a traffic light put there.
Here's what we're going to do in the next week or so:
--I am going to meet with Craig Hammerman of Community Board 6. He tells me that there are traffic-calming projects slated for our neighborhood that will start being implemented soon. I'm going to get the details from him and find out more about how we can lobby to get changes in place ASAP.
--Paco is going to reach out to the police and find out how we can let them know about our concerns and demand action.
--Betsy is going to compile a list of schools and day cares in the immediate to help us make our case that we need traffic calming now.
--Laura is going to do the same for senior citizen centers and other community organizations.
I'm inspired by the discussion we had and look forward to more in the future.
Best,
Sarah
