Tony, Are we talking about getting put on the agenda for assemblies or bike ban or both?  January should give us enough time to get things organized, although February would be better for my schedule.  I think I am going to have a Collingswood Streets house party sometime very soon, and we can also talk about this then and plan future meetings.  Thanks,

Stella

My wife said that this should go before the Zone PTA first, since all of the individual PTA presidents are at that meeting.  The November agenda is booked, and December is a dead month as far as attendance.  Do we want to get on the January agenda?  I can have my wife ask the Zone president to add us.  Who will attend?  We shoiuld get together in advance and come up with an agenda.

Cool, can you ask her about who okays assemblies, and then feel her out about the bike ban?  If she is pro bike ban then don't let her in on what-all we have been discussing.  If any PTA people are seriously against our purpose, then we can start with the parents first, although that will be more time consuming.  Thanks!

Hey Tony,

In our first meeting we had on the bike ban, I think we concluded with the desire to contact the schools to set up some assemblies on bike safety (meeting minutes are on the website).  This would be a good step in establishing goodwill as we then transition to discussing the ban with PTA's.

If you could see if you can get the emails of the PTA presidents that would help. Meanwhile does anyone know who in the schools decides on what assemblies will be presented, and are they all scheduled at the beginning of the year or is there time to get some scheduled for the spring?

I think you're right, PTAs and parents in general (as well as the kids!) are the people to talk to, in order to build support.  If we go straight to the Board of Ed as one person or a small group we will get shot down. If we are a broad coalition we will have real influence.

I would recommend contacting each of the PTA presidents independently to ask for a spot on their next meeting agenda.  The principals don't really set the agendas, the PTA's do.  My wife is the co-president of the Middle School PTA and secretary of the Zone (town-wide) PTA.  I can probably get the e-mail addresses of each president (if that is something they can legally share with me).
I'm travelling for business through the end of the year, so I won't be able to attend any meetings this year. But if we would like to defer this to next year, I can help contact the presidents and help with the meetings.  Plus, I would guess attendance is better after the holidays.  Do we have a timeframe for this?

I don't think a lot of folks know about the ban, would you consider speaking
at the five elementary school's PTA's? the folks that go them are usually
core members and are very involved. The easiest thing to do would be to call
the principals/supervisor (Tatem) and ask to come to one of the meetings.
They all have school wide emails and could pass on any information.
Unfortunately the school board is very involved right now with having to
come up with some ideas about superintendents for the three school districts
by December and then the budget will be following, probably during March
would be a good time to approach the board. I usually attend board meetings
and could possibly help with that part.

I want to send a quick welcome to all of the new members and remind everyone
that discussions can be started by any member and joined in by any member.
(If you don't want every discussion email you can disable that in your
preferences). "Pages" can be posted and edited by anyone, so we can create
group documents and collaborations.

An update on what I am doing: I finished my Bike Lane Feasibility Study for
Haddon and Collings Aves and will hear what my advising professor thinks of
it on Tuesday. For my second Independent Study I would like to work with
members of this group. I think the theme of the study could be "How Online
Social Networking Can Bring About Policy Changes" or something similar. Some
ideas, let me know what you all think- 1) Work on organizing people,
especially parents to overturn the board of ed. bike ban. 2) Get a group(s)
together to do a walkability assesment of their neighborhood(s)- this could
be fun and is something everybody can do. 3) Create an online survey
regarding specific bike and pedestrian issues in Collingswood. 4) Some
combination or something totally different. It depends on what everyone is
interested in doing, because I would like to get the input of anyone who
wants to participate. Let me know if any of these floats your boat!

Finally, if you get a moment, log into the main Collingswood Streets page
and read my little blog about Climate Change (Today is the international day
of blogging about climate change).

If you have news or thoughts please post 'em!

Thanks,

Stella
