More on Flexible Carpooling
On Monday after the conference I was in San Francisco and I went and watched the casual carpooling at one of the popular pick-up points, College and Claremont in Oakland. In an hour and a half 49 carpools were formed, giving rides to 112 people, none of which was pre-arranged.

This is really interesting. I was on a hitchhiking trip in Europe years ago, and was surprised that at least when leaving major cities it was hardly the solitary endeavor it is here — you often had to stand in line with a bunch of other scruffy backpackers to hitch a ride.
Hitching has such a bad reputation here, I’m glad to hear it’s alive and well under another name, thanks to HOV lanes…
