Dear  Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion,
As a constituent I have been admiring the changes that have been happening on 161st street. Slowly, your  vision of a "Downtown Bronx" is emerging. However, a crucial link is missing. The intersection of 161st  Street and Rupert Place and the island between the new and old stadiums known as "Babe Ruth Plaza"  is a dangerous and unfriendly place for pedestrians and bikers be they residents or one of the many  people who visit the Bronx to enjoy a game.

The DOT has not been able to tell me if rehabilitation for this crossing (traffic calming measures and new pedestrian islands) will be a part of the redevelopment plan for the area. A major factor that inhibits economic development in CB4 is the poor quality of our infrastructure for pedestrians.  Local business will continue to grow and thrive if we can increase sidewalk space, make intersections more safe and welcome pedestrians and bikes.

People come from all over the city to see baseball games in our neighborhood. This represents an opportunity for local businesses. But, if our sidewalks are uninviting and seem dangerous people will make a b-line for the stadium and never explore the neighborhood. When that happens, we suffer all of the negatives of a big stadium, but none of the positives.

Please pressure the DOT to be more forthcoming about the plans for this intersection and hold them to a high standard so that 161st Street will some day become the "Downtown Bronx" you once described.

Sincerely,
Susan Donovan
