- I'm a California native, and have been commuting by bike for the last 18 years, ever since spending a semester as an exchange student in Miyazaki, Japan at the age of 14. Unfortunately, half of those years have been spent in Southern California, and so I've had a somewhat combative bicycling experience. Pet transportation peeves: "free" parking that's anything but, having to box my bike to take it on a train in the US, and Amtrak's habit of either putting you on a bus or being 16 hours late, while still costing more and taking longer than flying on Southwest Airlines. I'm currently a PhD student in planetary geophysics, and am advocating for better bicycle infrastructure in Pasadena, CA.

- Vegetable gardening in (large) containers, homebrewing, internet propaganda, Mars, concentrated solar thermal power plants, backpacking, bike touring, earthships.
