- I am 56 years old and a resident of the Upper West Side since 1982. I started bicycling about 7 years ago and initially found riding with motor traffic on city streets scary and dangerous. These same fears keep many New Yorkers, especially older people, from using their bikes for local travel and errands. I like the idea of separate bike lanes with dividers that prevent motor vehicle use. I have no experience in urban planning (I'm a medical doctor) but am willing to try to help.
